You should seek immediate medical care at a hospital emergency room as soon as possible after a sexual assault, even if you don’t think you have any injuries.
At the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell (NYP) Emergency Room, you will be escorted to a private space, where you will be met by an Advocate and a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE). These individuals are specially trained to provide expert medical care as well as compassionate emotional support during the Emergency Room visit.
You will be offered a comprehensive medical and forensic exam while in the Emergency Room.
Everything that is offered in the Emergency Room is your choice.
Everything that is offered in the Emergency Room during this visit, related to the acute sexual assault, is free of charge.

At the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell (NYP) Emergency Room, you have the option of meeting with a Department of Health trained Emergency Room Advocate. This Advocate is specifically trained to respond to survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and family violence. Your Advocate is available to remain with you throughout your Emergency Room visit, including (if desired) during the medical exam.
The Advocate will explain your options for receiving medical care and will make sure your voice is heard and your needs are met.
NYP Victim Intervention Program Advocates are women and men of at least 21 years of age, who all share a commitment to support survivors and advocate on their behalf through the Emergency Room experience.
With your permission, the Advocate can connect you to Victim Intervention Program Social Workers, who will follow up with you after your discharge from the hospital and provide ongoing support.

It is important to consider receiving a full medical evaluation after experiencing a sexual assault, even if you don’t think you have any injuries.
New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center (NYP) provides sexual assault forensic exams up until one month post-assault. Once you arrive at the NYP Emergency Room, you will be escorted to a private space. You will be met by a team of specialized providers who will help you explore your options.
If you choose, you can have a forensic exam performed by one of our trained Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners (SAFE). Forensic exam steps may include a head-to- toe medical evaluation and taking samples of blood, urine, and/or swabs of body surface areas. With your permission, the SAFE can take pictures to document injury and/or collect clothing for evidence.
If the assault occurred within 96 hours, you can opt to receive a New York State Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit
An Advocate can stay with you during the exam to provide support and answer any questions.
You may be offered preventative treatment for any potential exposure to sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy.
